Chapter 1023: "What nonsense are you talking about?" Eric shook his head. "How could we ever not care?” His phone buzzed mid-sentence.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtIt was Ernest. Busy at the office all day, he'd called to get an update on the results of the consultation.
"It's Ernest," Eric said, glancing at Linda before picking up.
"Yeah, the consultation went well; they've got the results... Uh-huh... Got it..." After hanging up, he turned back to Linda with a reassuring look. "See? Ernest hasn't ditched you either. We're family-always will be." Hearing this, Linda went rigid, tears streaming as she nodded over and over, her voice breaking. "I know... I know..." "Linda, don't lose hope." Eric eased her back onto the bed, his tone soft but firm. “The consultation just wrapped. The experts say if you stick with the treatment, there's a real shot at getting better." "For real?" Linda paused, tears glistening at the edges of her eyes.
"You're not just saying that?" "I wouldn't lie to you. It's the truth." Eric gave a resolute nod. The doctors couldn't promise a full turnaround, but even a sliver of possibility was worth chasing.
"Linda, I'm not giving up, so you shouldn't either, okay?" Hearing what he said, Linda looked up at him, silent for a long stretch, and then nodded slowly. Her hand clamped onto his with desperate strength. "Eric, don't abandon me. Don't letface this alone! You're all I've got!" "I won't," Eric swore, his voice steady and sincere. "I'd never abandon you..." It was his fault she was in this situation-how could he possibly turn his back on her? "The doctors will swing by soon. Splash swater on your face, freshen up a bit, yeah?" "Okay." Linda bobbed her head, her nerves settling. "Whatever you say, I'll do it." That night, as Hadley finished rinsing Joy off and was about to settle in with a storybook, the doorbell chimed. "I'll grab it..." "Melba, I've got this," Hadley said, waving her off as she headed to the entrance. She swung the door open, and there stood Eric, as expected.
"Hadley." Eric flashed a strained smile, guilt etched across his face. He peeked past her. "Joy in bed yet?" He took a step, but Hadley planted herself in his path.
Her stare was icy, detached. "I'd rather you didn't cinside." "Hadley..." Eric's brow creased. "I couldn't get away from the hospital this morning. I'll make it right with Joy, I swear."
"You'll patch things up today, but what about the next time?" Hadley's gaze bored into him, he sharp eyes she laid it out. "Linda's upflinching ass health is critical. She depends on you entirely now and could require your support at any second." Eric's mouth opened slightly. "It's not forever..."
"Not forever?" Hadley gave a small, skeptical shake of her head. "How long is 'not forever? Recovering from something like paralysis isn't quick or certain."
She pressed on, relentless. "As long as she's not back on her feet, days like today, where Joy gets let down, will keep piling up! You flaked once, and she was miserable all day!" Eric stiffened, shflooding through him. "Then letgo in and make her feel better..."
