Chapter 1707:
“Not yet,” Lone Ranger replied. “But listen—I found something else. The Powell heir is still in critical condition,
and their patriarch is furious. There's a huge bounty out for any trace of Leif. The Powells are just a rung below
the Hopkins family in influence, but their reputation is toxic. If you're really planning to move against them, be
smart. They're not above playing dirty. Especially now. Their retaliation will be merciless.”
Corrine’s face turned to ice. “I understand.”
“What happened between you and them?” Lone Ranger couldn't help but ask, sensing a life-or-death situation
unfolding.
Corrine explained—just enough.
Lone Ranger stilled. His voice dropped into a darker register. “So those serious injuries... it's tied to you too?”
“No,” Corrine said.
She hadn’t needed Lone Ranger to dig into it. She already knew exactly what had happened—and why.

necessary.”
“I know.”
After ending the call, Corrine stepped out of the bathroom, only to find Nate standing there, his coat still draped
over one arm.
A flicker of panic crossed her face, too quick to catch, but she masked it with a practiced smile. “Back already?”
Could it be that he had overheard everything she'd just said?
“You were in there for a while,” Nate said, watching her closely.

Corrine moved forward and looped her arms around his neck. She stood on tiptoe to plant a light kiss on his lips.
“Stay out of women’s business.” Nate's arm naturally encircled her waist. “So the lady’s ready for bed?”
“It’s tfor a good night's sleep,” she said pointedly, arching an elegant brow as if to warn him not to push his
luck.
Nate chuckled before sweeping her off her feet, carrying her toward the bed with a grin.
The next morning, Corrine stepped out of the meeting room and made a beeline for her office. She had barely
sunk into her chair when the phone rang.
“Corrine, do you have a minute?” Rachel's voice clightly through the receiver.
Corrine rolled her shoulders, easing the tension from her neck. “Just wrapped up. What's up?”
“Nothing urgent,” Rachel replied with a hint of cheer. “Just thought I'd treat you to a meal. Jules will be joining us
a bit later.”
Corrine glanced at the wall clock. “Sounds good. Where are we meeting?”
Rachel's voice instantly perked up.
