Chapter 1457:

“If you were there, you'd have stepped in for me,” Melvin said, knowing her too well. “I needed to hear what

your parents really thought.”

Marriage wasn't just about the two of them—it tied both families together. If Jessica had been present, her

parents might have sugar-coated things just to make her happy.

Melvin didn’t want that. He needed Roland and Lena to mean it when they gave their approval.

Jessica felt a sudden warmth bloom in her chest. Still, she gave him a playful nudge and said, “Dummy.”

Melvin didn’t say a word.

That night, Melvin joined the Prescotts for dinner. Around ten, he stood up and said it was tfor him to head

home.

“I'll cwith you!” Jessica clung to him like she had no plans of letting go anytsoon.

“I'll see you tomorrow,” Melvin said, knowing it wasn’t right to take her with him so late.

“Textwhen you wake up.”

Jessica gave him a glare. First day of being together, and this guy was already messing it up!

“Go on, get going,” Roland waved them off. “Girls grow up—you can’t keep them under your roof forever.”

“Would you have wanted to be apart from Mom on your first day together?” Jessica said, hitting him right where

it hurt. “If Grandpa had told you that, how would you have felt?”

Roland froze. She was doing this on purpose.

“We're heading out of town tomorrow, not sure when we'll be back,” Lena added, knowing Jessica like the back

of her hand and feeling at ease now that she trusted Melvin. “Take good care of her.”

“I will,” Melvin said sincerely.

Without wasting a second, Jessica got herself ready and followed him out. Melvin had tried to say no, but she

was relentless.

After saying goodbye to her parents, Jessica practically skipped out the door, dragging Melvin along.

“You should've stayed htonight,” Melvin muttered as he buckled her seatbelt. “Could’ve helped them pack

for their trip.”

“No need to worry, my dad can handle all that,” Jessica replied quickly.

In truth, she knew there was no trip. Her mom had made that up so Melvin wouldn't feel guilty about taking her

away. And Melvin was still kept in the dark.
